I know you are thinking that as Motocross Madness is a bike game from the late 90s it has probably aged pretty poorly. Well, I can tell you right away that there is a kind of charm to this old-school bike racer that many modern games simply cannot match. Sure, it is basic as hell by today's standards, but this is a game that is a fun time and while it may not have a lot of staying power, it is great for short bursts here and there.

Let’s Get Muddy!

For a game that was released in 1998, Motocross Madness has more than enough game modes. You have the Stunt Quarry, Baja, national and Supercross modes to play through. The main game mode where you try to prove you are the best motocross rider around by winning races is your typical fare than you would expect. The other game modes are a nice distraction and are probably what you will spend the majority of your time doing.

Hitting The Jumps

Part of the reason I feel this game holds up is that it is so easy to play. There is a decent selection of bikes for you to use and a ton of tracks as well. Most of the backgrounds look the same, but each track has its own layout. The game controls well enough and I would say that it leans more towards the arcade-style of racer than it does sim. That is fine with me though as it makes this a game that is very easy to pick up and play.

You can play with the keyboard well enough which is good as from what I can tell, this is a game that is very finicky when it comes to using certain controllers so that is something to keep in mind.

Motocross Customizer

For a game released in 1998, Motocross Madness goes all in with the customization thing. You can customize your rider in many different ways. You have lots of options at your disposal when it comes to tinkering with your bike. Best of all there is a track editor that allows you to come up with some pretty crazy motocross tracks. I tried to make one that was all jumps. I thought it sounded like a great idea, but it did not exactly work out how I thought it would. Those who love to mess around making stuff in games will have a great time with this.

3D Acceleration

Remember in the 90s how it was all about having that 3D accelerator card or whatever you like to call it? Well, that is the case here. I know that the graphics are nothing to brag about by today's standards, but at the time this level of 3D in a game, especially a motocross game like this was a pretty big deal. It moves fast and looks pretty decent too so I have no complaints about the visuals apart from the fact they clearly show their age.

I know a game like Motocross Madness is not going to be everyone’s cup of tea, but I was surprised by how much fun I had with this. While it is very shallow in comparison to what we have these days in regards to motocross games. I feel that the fun factor is pretty high here and it makes this the kind of game that is ideal for fire up if you are looking for something quick, easy, and most importantly fun to play for 30 minutes or so.

This is a game that offers great replay and money value. Events in Motocross Madness include: The Stunt Quarry, Super Cross, and Baja courses. Five (5) different stunt quarries are available as well as over 30 indoor and outdoor tracks. With so many events and multiple tracks and quarries to choose from the next racing or stunt challenge is just a mouse click away. As if these were not enough there are 16 different stunts to master and you can even taunt other riders as you leave them sucking exhaust and dust.

This feature rich game offers still more, when you get too good for the supplied tracks, build your own with the simple to use track editor and when computer opponents no longer give you enough grief on the track try out the multi player capabilities of Motocross Madness.

All things considered, this is a game that will quickly find its way to your favorites list.

There are only a few things I will never, ever do in my life, and I think taking up dirt biking now tops the list. If anyone dares to ask me why, I'll just hand him a copy of Motocross Madness.

Microsoft's new supercross racing game portrays the sport in all its agonizing glory -- a fast, maniacal sport that's more fun (and much safer) to watch than it is to participate. You can't help but laugh as your on-screen persona flies through the air with the greatest of ease, and cringe as he slams into the earth like a meteor. This game probably won't do much to recruit people into the real life sport, that's for damn sure.

There's many different ways to play this game. One is to simply kick back and see how wild you can drive these two wheel demons, since each of the thirty tracks can be practiced without any interference from opponents. If you're feeling a little cocky, there's a library of sixteen midair stunts to perform with a controller combination. These show-off moves won't do much to aid you in your racing abilities, but when you actually land the bike after a stunt (a trick in itself), it's incredibly satisfying. And for the sadists out there, it's a trip to watch your biker tumble and skid across the sand. Can't say I blame you for seeing how many different ways you can smack up your vehicle.

But obviously the real deal is the racing element, and the developers made the competition completely customizable. You can tweak the number of laps, the amount of challengers, even choose the style of bike and rider for the specific type of track. Better still, the game offers some mean competition over the net with up to seven other opponents. Try locking wheels with a bunch of buddies who love to watch you wreck and see how far you can get around the track!

Motocross Madness 2 Tracks

The game is well balanced and a kick to play and the only real complaint spawns from the game's hefty system requirements -- 3D hardware a necessity because of the game's photorealistic imagery. As in most fast-paced games, the smoother the animation, the easier it is to control. So if you don't have the hardware, don't bother with this game.

As a final note, we've been playing Motocross Madness with all sorts of controllers, including force-feedback sticks, control pads, even the keyboard. But the one controller to keep an eye on is Microsoft's own Sidewinder Sensor. While it controls most racing games well, it really fits this game perfectly with its handlebar shape and control method (you tilt it, and it recognizes the subtle movements left, right, back, and forward). The controller isn't perfectly suited for all types of games, but if you're looking for something different and versatile (as well as something that fits this game like a glove), Microsoft's controller definitely fits the bill.
